What is a Virtual Private Network?
Business communication has changed considerably in the last two decades. Today business is no longer a local or regional concern. Access to a global market is a major concern to business. Communication with distant facilities is another factor. Offsite secure backup of data is becoming an increasing concern as well. There is one thing that all of them need: A way to maintain fast, secure and reliable communications wherever their offices are.
In the past, this has meant the use of leased lines to maintain a wide area network (WAN). Leased lines, ranging from ISDN (integrated services digital network) to OC3 (Optical Carrier-3) fiber, to allow business to expand its communication beyond its local area. A WAN is more reliable than the Internet however, it can be prohibitively expensive.
A VPN is a private network that uses a public network (usually the Internet) to connect networks or users together. Instead of using a leased line, a VPN uses "virtual" connections routed through the Internet from the company's private network to other networks or employees.
